ANSWER: The pilot project will run for one (1) year.

Q. Why is the City of Burnaby doing this pilot project?
ANSWER: Currently there is no program in any BC municipality to collect and divert used cooking oil from disposal by residents. Used cooking oil from residential homes is typically placed in the garbage or poured down the drain, where it binds to waste pipes, slowing the flow, and potentially creating a blockage in the pipes. The Used Cooking Oil Recycling Pilot Project not only follows the City of Burnaby’s sustainability principles and long term commitment to protecting the environment, it will also enhance the “one stop” recycling service for Burnaby residents at the City’s depot.

Q. Why is the City of White Rock doing this pilot project?
ANSWER: This pilot project is a wonderful way for area residents to be involved in changing their environment and doing something positive to keep used cooking oils out of the sewage systems. Dry grease binds itself to the waste pipes slowing the flow, if there is somewhere else to dispose of the oil there will be less clogged drains!! Something no-one likes dealing with. Also, the Municipalities are looking seriously at all ways to keep such waste from the landfills and this is a good beginning.

This option has never been offered to individual homes before, so for the first time this service is available to the White Rock residents and with general participation it is sure to be a success, with the possibility of expanding the project into other Municipalities.

At present, the BIA represents more than 450 business members.

Q. Why should I recycle my used frying/cooking oil?
ANSWER: It takes very little time to place the cooled used cooking oil into a container somewhere safe away from children and animals and when it is time to take your recycling off to the  Still Creek Recycling facility - bring it along, where trained staff will be there to assist you.

This is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to make a difference with very little effort. Supporting this pilot project will not only contribute to a healthier environment, it may lead to the interest and support from other municipalities to establish similar collection programs
